DANCING IN THE SUMMER RAIN
Words & Music by Neil Pike ©2014
You used to carry your convictions like a poster on a bedroom wall, my friend
And all your ideaology was never ever ever gonna break or bend
But the years went by and we all grew old
And yesterday’s child got left out in the cold
And everybody’s dream got sold
That’s just the way it is
You used to laugh at everything
But your humour all dried up in the end.
I don’t know who you are, my friend
Once upon a moment when everything was meant to be
There was a season of potential and someone told us we could be free
But the moment passed and you ceased to feel
You traded your potential for a hundred dollar meal
And just because it happened doesn’t mean that it was real
You used to smlle like a sunflower
But flowers always fade away
I don’t know who you are today
Traded your love for a seat at the table
And a dollar you could always spend
Look in the mirror if you think you’re able
If there’s nothing there, well don’t despair
If a ghost looks back just be aware
That everyone must face it in the end
You used to dance like Caligula and talk just like Jesus on the mount
But despite all your charisma somewhere the fire went out.
And the season changed and the wind blew cold
And you swapped out all your freedom for a pocketful of gold
But some of us were never ever bought and sold
That’s just the way it is
You used to say you had the answer,
Everyone was blinded by your faith
Now you’re a salesman dealing units in the market place.
You… are certain that the dreams you hold will last.
You… think you’re somehow better than the past.
But in ten years time things won’t seem the same
You’ll have cut off all your dreadlocks, you’ll be playing your parents game
But some of us’ll still be dancing in the summer rain
Traded your love for a seat at the table
And a dollar you could always spend
Look in the mirror if you think you’re able
If there’s nothing there, well don’t despair
If a ghost looks back just be aware
That everyone must face it in the end.
